Sourdough Bread Starter

One of the most amazing foods is sourdough bread. I find the commercial purchased breads lack that real sourdough flavour. They are often made using commercial yeast with a wave of either faux sourdough starter or even would you believe flavouring.

Sourdough is made by creating a wild starter. Once you have created the “mother” you will have genuine sourdough starter for life and amazing sourdough bread.

Ingredients

Plain flour
Water

Method

Day One
  • Add 3/4 cup flour to a glass bowl
  • Mix in 1/2 cup water
  • Cover with tea-towel and leave 24 hours at room temperature
Day Two – Seven
  • Discard 1/2 the mix
  • Add 1/2 cup flour to a glass bowl
  • Mix in 1/4 cup water
  • Cover with tea-towel and leave 24 hours at room temperature
  • Repeat for each of the days
  • Each day you should see bubbles on the top of the mixture
  • From here on in you can casually feed your “mother” I add a 1/4 cup of flour and a splash of water once a week if in the refridgerator.
  • The mix should smell a bit like a yeasty beer
